Introduction

This manual is a collection of more than 40 landscape paintings by Wang Shimin. In his early years, Wang Shimin often copied ancient paintings, especially those dating back to the Song and Yuan dynasties. Therefore, his works at this stage are elegant and delicate but lacking in strength. He used the traditional techniques not only as a means to create his own works, but also as a standard to judge other paintings. He believed artists should follow past traditions of painting and achieve a spiritual resonance with great masters of the past. In his middle age, Wang Shimin mostly studied under the tutelage of Dong Qichang. His works during this period are ethereal, delicate, and free. In his later years, Wang Shimin tended towards the style of Huang Gongwang while taking in the styles of Dong Yuan, Ju Ran, Wang Meng and other masters. His works during this period deliver more powerful emotional experiences. After the age of 70, Wang Shimin lived a stable life and was able to devote himself to painting, and thus his painting skills improved even further.
