Introduction

With the emergence of virtual reality (VR), our relationship with technology has shifted dramatically. Contrary to all the previous technologies, VR disrupts the logic of the whole process. Once we enter the VR world, the framework of the whole world of experience will be reorganized by VR technology. In this book, the authors makes and defends two assertions. First, there is no ontological difference between VR and natural reality. Second, as the collective creator of virtual world, we—human beings as a whole—have led a systematic and meaningful life for the first time. Therefore, it is evident that this is not a book that predicts the influence exerted by technology on future, nor a deductive science fiction. Fictitious stories are included in this book to help people understand VR at its logical limits. Through the analysis of these intriguing stories, we will see what will happen if the combination of such technologies as digital simulation, sensory immersion, and functional long distance remote control develops and reaches its peak. In fact, it does not matter to what extent today’s technology will contribute to this combination. The point is that, for one thing, the creation of VR provides us with an opportunity to better understand the nature of reality; for the other, a full understanding of the nature of reality helps us better see that how VR technology, though in its primitive form, is prompting us to make a fundamental choice.
