Introduction

In 2018, young scholar Lu Mingjun interviewed more than 10 editorial board members and authors of October, a famous American contemporary art review magazine founded in 1976, on its birth, operation, and historical changes. The majority of these interviewees, including Rosalyn Klaus, Douglas Klimp, Benjamin Buchloh, Yve-Alain Bois, David Joselit, and Leah Dickerman, are the most significant contemporary art critics and contemporary art historians in the United States after Greenberg. Their works and views have not only influenced the United States, but also spread to Europe and even the whole world. However, to this day, we still lack understanding of the stories behind their theories, especially the reasons for their criticism and theoretical practice. This series of interviews was done to fill this gap. It not only presents the October School in an all-round manner, but also outlines the contemporary art criticism and theories since the 1960s.
