Introduction

This 336-page book showcases 311 inscribed artifacts from the Three Kingdoms, Jin Dynasty, and Southern and Northern Dynasties. These inscriptions appear on a fascinating array of mediums, including bricks, tiles, pottery, bronze, and bamboo. The book features not only the inscriptions themselves but also insightful research articles from esteemed experts like Professor Zhu Tianshu. Additionally, it provides detailed explanations of these artifacts, which were discovered in recent decades. The artifacts are part of collections of prestigious museums like the Palace Museum, the Gansu Museum, the British Museum and the Museum of Ethnography, Sweden. They hold immense value for those who study philology, history, and art. They are invaluable resources for textual research, historical verification, and the study of ancient Chinese calligraphy.

Under the general editorship of Liu Zhengcheng, a renowned calligraphy scholar and calligrapher, the Chinese Calligraphy series encompasses Chinese calligraphy works from prehistory through the Shang and Zhou dynasties and up to modern times, with each installment edited by leading Chinese calligraphy experts. With nearly eighty installments published so far, this volume marks a significant new addition to the series. The vast time period covered, the richness of calligraphy styles represented, and the meticulous editing process made this volume a complex undertaking that required five years to complete. Professor Zhu Tianshu served as the editor-in-chief, with Liu Xin and Chen Huaqiang as deputy editors. To further enrich the publication, the renowned calligrapher Professor Wang Yong from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and esteemed scholar Feng Shi from the Institute of Archeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences have joined the project as academic consultants.
