Introduction

The Central Conservatory of Music's International Music Practice and Exchange Center (renamed the International Chinese Language (Music) Education Practice and Research Center in 2022) started the development of the series in 2015. The compilation of this series was started in 2015 by the Central Conservatory of Music's International Music Exchange and Experience Center (later upgraded to the International Chinese Language (Music) Education Practice and Research Base in 2022). It is the world's first bilingual (Chinese and English) collection of learning materials for Chinese music, encompassing books, music scores, and video demonstrations. Designed to showcase Chinese music on the world stage, this series caters to a global audience of music enthusiasts. So far, the series features five Chinese instruments: percussion, suona, dizi, konghou, and sheng. These learning materials are compiled by renowned professors from the Central Conservatory of Music. Featuring clear and concise explanations in both Chinese and English, the series utilizes international standard music notation, alongside performance demonstrations in both photographic and video formats. This combination offers a systematic and scientifically-structured approach, making it easy for learners to grasp the unique characteristics, playing techniques, and classic repertoire associated with each instrument. The repertoire draws upon both traditional and contemporary Chinese music, meticulously chosen to embody the very essence of Chinese culture. This curated selection allows learners to embark on a delightful journey of discovery, where they can not only appreciate and learn Chinese music, but also master basic performance skills. By the end of this journey, students will not only have mastered pieces of music varying difficulty but also have developed a strong understanding of the rich cultural context surrounding Chinese music.
