The author focuses on the turn of traditional Chinese ideologies in the modern times. By analyzing how scholars holding different political and cultural positions interpreted, commented and criticized China’s traditional political ideologies based on their respective understanding of the changes in national situations, the author strives to present the continuity and sublation of China’s ideological and political history.
The book is divided into four sections, namelyk, “the ideological heritage of Zhang Taiyan”, “the agency of tradition”, “the pursuit of ‘new politics’’’ and “the evolution of state governance”. The book is led by some core issues, including how to understand Chinese tradition; how to comprehend the complicated relationship between Chinese tradition and Chinese revolution; how to solve issues relating to state governance from a historical perspective; and how to interpret the significance of Chinese revolution in a contemporary context.
