Code of Scientific Revolution dissects the Western history in modern times from a unique perspective, in order to answer the famous Needham question—“Why modern science developed in Europe rather than in China.” The author follows the train of thoughts of Archer Jones, Charles Tilly, Hugh Kennedy and other military revolution theorists and extends their theories. He first analyzes the Crusades, Renaissance and Voyages of Discovery era in a new perspective to reveal their capitalist nature in service of wars; and traces the emergence of mercantilism in Europe’s military affairs. Then, he puts that war is indeed the cyclic accelerator of business development, as it is required by arms races. Under such a framework of inter-country competition system, he comes to explain why the scientific revolution took place in Europe rather than in China.
