Introduction

Through a grand visual field, the large-scale Chinese traditional orchestra suite Sound Portrait of Qiantang River presents a panoramic view of the history and culture in the Qiantang River region in a historical and cultural context. The suite consists of seven chapters that are independent from each other and interconnected. Origin and The Big Tide depict the infinite life of the Qianjiang River growing from a trickling stream into a mighty torrent, as they display the Qiantang River tide’s “roaring waves that rise in the whistling wind” and “lap on the stone cliffs”. Hatou Labor Song, The Song of Dancing Walk and Cloudland are eulogies to the industrious, fearless and optimistic people living along the river. Life is Endless and Ode to the God of Tide give new life to history and legends in modern ethnic musical poetry. The chapters are all artistically ingenious, and the music and visual effects complement and bring out the best in each other. Most notably, the in-depth explorative innovation in the unique notes and aesthetics of traditional Chinese orchestras endow the suite with a special artistic element and logic.
