Introduction

Zhu Da, also known as Bada Shanren (literally “Mountain Man of the Eight Greats”), was a prodigious talent good at painting landscapes, flowers and birds. With free and unrestrained brushwork, he vividly depicted lotus flowers at different blooming stages, with straight or curved stems in slant or lateral positions. Some lotus leaves stretch out; while others rolled up, each showing different shades of colors. The flowers are either hiding behind the leaves or blooming above the leaves. The artist used splashing and dribbling techniques to create five shades of ink when drawing leaves and used a fine brush to outline the delicate petals, which contrast with the free, bold brushstrokes of the leaves. This painting offers readers a glimpse into Bada Shanren’s superb brushstroke techniques.
